CIVIL ENGINEERING
PRACTICE
Author Guidelines
1. Before commencing to write your article, please send us
an outline of what you propose to do/cover for our review and
comments.
2. All manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced on 8.5"
x 11" paper with 1" margins. Recommended manuscript
length should be 24 - 40 typed, double-spaced pages (approximately
6,000 - 10,000 words).
3. All artwork (photos, figures, charts, graphs, tables, etc.)
should accompany the final manuscript. Photos should be black
and white or color prints. Do not imbed graphics files in word
processing files -- please keep graphics files separate, one
per each figure in its native format. If you need the artwork
returned to you, please note so on the reverse side of each piece.
Please include a short paragraph biography of yourself (and any
co-authors), with photo(s).
4. Please keep the style of writing for article similar to
the style of writing in Scientific American. Please remember
that our readership is across all the divisions of Civil Engineering.
If there are particular terms, acronyms, procedures, etc., that
might not be familiar to other practicing Civil Engineers in
other divisions, please define them clearly and concisely.
5. Please refrain from mentioning a particular company's services
or products if a generic product name or service or procedure
can be substituted.
6. Please adhere to our deadlines for outline, manuscript
and artwork, and review of the edited manuscript. If you cannot
make a certain deadline, please let us know as soon as possible
to make alternative arrangements. To be considered for a particular
issue, please use the schedule below:
Spring/Summer Issue
Outline Due: September 1
Paper Due: December 15
Fall/Winter Issue
Outline Due: April 1
Paper Due: July 15
7. All outlines and papers are peer reviewed as the basis
for acceptance.
8. Acceptance of an outline does not necessarily guarantee
final acceptance of the completed paper.
9. If your paper is accepted, please supply final hard copy,
a word-processed file (Windows 95/98/XP-based software preferred),
best hard copy of the artwork (native disk files of artwork if
possible). PLEASE PROVIDE ALL FIGURES AND PHOTOS ONE PER FILE.
DO NOT INSERT INTO A WORD FILE.
10. If your paper is accepted, you will be able to review
your article in page proof form after editing prior to publication.
